Mr Matthews developed and expanded the NHS Plastic Surgery Hand Surgery Service in Coventry and Warwickshire before appointing a colleague to develop it further. However, he has retained his specific interest in the surgical management of Dupuytren's contracture, a condition which progressively compromises hand usage in those of Celtic descent and undertakes procedures to restore or improve hand function on a private basis.
